From International Stages to Hamilton’s Community Theatre Scene
From international stages to Hamilton’s community theatre scene, Loretta Pennington has found a natural next chapter – guiding young performers to discover their own talent.
Since 2021, as Director of Stagecraft at Riverlea Theatre, she has shaped a thriving after-school programme that now supports around 130 students each week. Her role spans everything from tutor development and scheduling to producing the annual showcase and introducing new opportunities, including a growing pantomime programme, Technical Classes, and classes encompassing acting for the screen.
Loretta brings more than 25 years of professional experience to her work. A trained soprano, she has performed across New Zealand and internationally, including touring with The Secret Garden, performing the role of Christine in Ken Hill’s Phantom of the Opera in Japan and the UK, and working with Opera Unlimited in the UK and the United States. She has also performed with Opera NZ, contributed to numerous recordings, and even appeared on screen in Xena: Warrior Princess. Alongside this, she has led her successful company Lyrica Productions Ltd for two decades, delivering performances at high profile events and festivals both here and overseas.
What sets her apart isn’t just her résumé, but how she uses that experience. As a long-time voice teacher, she has worked with hundreds of students—many achieving top exam results and going on to further study or professional careers. That same thoughtful, encouraging approach is at the heart of Stagecraft.
“I’ve been lucky to have had a wonderful career, and perform on some incredible stages,” she says. “Now I get to help young people find their own place on stage, which is just as rewarding.”
Under her leadership, Stagecraft has grown into a supportive space where children and teens can explore drama, and musical theatre at their own pace. Whether building confidence, preparing for exams, or stepping into the spotlight for the first time, students are encouraged to develop both skill and self-belief.
For Loretta, it’s a meaningful full-circle moment – moving from performing to mentoring, and helping shape the next generation of artists.
If you have a young person interested in performing arts, Stagecraft at Riverlea Theatre offers a welcoming place to start. For more information, contact Loretta HERE or visit our Stagecraft website HERE.
